In this study, we report the first case report on the use of PDE5 inhibitors for the management of erectile dysfunction in a male patient.
A 30-year-old male was diagnosed with erectile dysfunction after a 4-year history of ED. He denied any history of drug use or physical or emotional problems. He had been taking sildenafil (Viagra®) since the age of 18 and had not been taking any medications for more than one year. His ED was caused by erectile dysfunction. A physical examination revealed a painful erection with a penis erection that lasted for over 4 months, and there were no other causes for this problem. Blood tests were done and results showed an elevated level of prolactin, and urine test showed normal results. He was prescribed a 50 mg dose of sildenafil (Viagra®) and was instructed to take it for 5 days. The patient was instructed to avoid sexual intercourse for 4 months because of the pain of ED. His ED was not improved after the 5-day course of sildenafil, and he was discharged from the hospital, but the patient continued to suffer from ED, and he continued to need further treatment for the rest of his life. The patient was then evaluated and his ED was improved with sildenafil (Viagra®) and he started taking the PDE5 inhibitor drug. His ED improved significantly after the 4-week course of sildenafil and his symptoms improved.
A further 2-week follow-up visit was performed to evaluate the response to sildenafil and sexual function improvement.
The objective of this case report is to describe the efficacy and safety of PDE5 inhibitors for the management of erectile dysfunction in men.
