HONOLULU, N. C. (HN) —The U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced this week that it has ordered a recall of Viagra and other medicines for the sale of the product.
“The FDA has identified Viagra and its generic equivalents, Cialis and Levitra, as potentially adulterated and unsafe. These products are marketed as having a different effect than the active ingredient Viagra, and are being marketed to consumers with a different degree of ED,” said FDA Chairman Scott Gottlieb. “The FDA is continuing to evaluate these products to ensure the safety and efficacy of the products.”
The recall is the result of the company’s efforts to market products using the same ingredients in the same dosage strengths. The FDA is still working with manufacturers to remove these products from the market.
In addition, FDA’s laboratory analysis of the product found that the product contains undeclared active ingredients, such as dapoxetine, which is an antidepressant, and is not approved for use in the treatment of depression.
The FDA has also warned consumers about the dangers of the product as it has been reported to contain the undeclared ingredient sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
“The FDA continues to monitor these products for these undeclared ingredients, and we are working with manufacturers to remove the products from the market,” Gottlieb said.
